Balsa wood (Ochroma Lagopus & Ochroma Pyramidale) is the world’s lightest commercial timber. It has been commercially logged since the 1900’s and sourced for its exceptional qualities in strength to weight ratio, its outstanding buoyancy properties and its thermal and acoustic standards.
Balsa Wood sources its Indonesia where it has been successfully grown in plantations. These areas supports the rapid growth rate of the balsa wood tree with its constant warm temperatures, rich soils and high rainfall without a noticeable dry season. With these perfect conditions to grow the wood, Indonesian plantations have been yielding the best quality balsa wood consistently each year, which is why it is in such high demand worldwide.
Multi Karya Samudra, under the operation and control of PT TSI, manages and produces balsa wood from plantation to final production. All processes are carried out under strict control to meet customer requirements for balsa wood. The balsa wood is processed and produced based on customer orders to keep the wood fresh and to allow better control of balsa wood density.

Balsa for model building
Most hobby shops have a large rack of balsa sheets, sticks, and blocks that you can choose from when you are going to build a model airplane from scratch. Undoubtedly, because of the nature of balsa, the actual weight of each piece of wood of the same size can vary slightly. When you select the pieces you want to buy, you should keep their final use in mind. Logically, one should select the lightest grades for lightly stressed model parts (nose blocks, wingtip blocks, fill-ins, etc.) and the heavier grades for important load-bearing parts of the structure (spars, fuselage stringers, etc.). To a large extent, this selection is already partly done for you.
